10/24/2014 Spoken WordsScriptures: Proverbs 25:11
Language is a gift from God. It separates us from the rest of His creation: makes us unique. We have been given the power of words. We must remember that with words comes the power to hurt or to heal. Words have the power to heal and the power to destroy. We can speak shallow words. The Bible shows us how we should desire to speak: "Pleasant words are as honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones," in Proverbs 16:24. Shallow words are those that have no meaning or no purpose. They tickle the ear, but do nothing for the soul. God's Word may not always tell us what we want to hear, but it always tells us what we need to hear! Pleasant words have lasting value. Ask yourself now: am I speaking the right words? We can speak words of death. The Bible says in Proverbs 18:21 "The tongue has the power of life and death." Words have the power to tear down: James 3:8 reads "the tongue...is unruly evil, full of deadly poison." Words can crush a person's spirit and leave them hopeless. Words can be instruments of danger. Jesus said that His words were life! Now ask yourself: could I receive the words I speak to others? We can speak words of life. Proverbs 15:4 says: "a wholesome tongue is a tree of life." Paul instructs us in Ephesians 4:29 to: "let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers." Every human needs words that encourage, inspire and give life! Words that promote good works in their lives. "Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer," says Psalm 19:14. Finally ask yourself: do my words promote life?
