9/2/2013 Superhero!Scriptures: Romans 5:6-8 Today were celebrated Superhero Sunday at church to send our young people back to school with a bang, this is the awesome lesson we learned: The creators of the Superman comic used many Biblical narratives to create who Superman was and all that occurred in his life. We can find many parallels between Jesus and superman. First, Superman had a secret personality. A rocket is launched from Krypton and lands on the property of Jonathan (whose middle name is Joseph) and Martha, who is originally referred to as Mary! There is a tiny infant aboard the rocket, Jonathan and Martha raise the infant as Clark Kent and instill in him his humanity. Superman's Kryptonian father's name was Jor-EL: EL is the Hebrew word for God! At age 30 Clark makes his first appearance as Superman. Clark Kent had a dual identity: he was Clark Kent and Superman, he fights for justice and the American way. Does this sound familiar? Jesus is fully God and fully man. Jesus came from above, but was raised in a small town, and He performed His first miracle in His thirties. Jesus' dual-identity is essential to His nature: God with us and God who loved us so much he became one of us. Jesus was God manifested in human flesh: Jesus the son of God and the son of man! Second parallel: superpowers! Superman can leap tall buildings in a single bound, can change the course of rivers and has genius intellect. He could fly: saving helicopters, planes and even move planets. He rescues Lois Lane telling her : "you are safe in my arms," and finally he defends the helpless. Jesus is the ultimate superpower! He created the universe and upholds it by the Word of His power. He can do all things: healings the sick, gives sight to the blind, raises the dead, walks on water, feeds 5,000, faces evil and challenges injustice. We are all safe and secure in His arms! Jesus tells us not worry because he has "overcome the world!" We have all fallen from grace but Jesus has raced to swoop us up! The final parallel: sacrificial passion! Superman faces an enemy named Doomsday and they both die in this battle. Superman gives his life to protect the people, but the story says that he only spends a few days in the grave until his Kryptonian body is miraculously restored. The passion of Christ was that He died for our sins! He was raised on the third day and is alive! Superman is just a comic strip, but Jesus did it for us in real life! Jesus is our real superhero! When we are unable to help ourselves He steps in. He conquered the beast: He battles sin, Satan and death! He overcame death, hell and the grave: all to save us! Do you need a real superhero in your life? Someone to catch you when you fall? Someone who will never let you go?? Do you need a Savior? Someone to carry you back into grace? Jesus is very real and He is a very personal superhero! Comments are closed.
